Greentree School, St. Anthony's School and the community of Drumheller recognizes the value of a breakfast for proper growth, development and functioning of our students.
Students who arrive without a proper morning meal, are encouraged to take advantage of the breakfast program. It runs each school morning from 8:30am to 8:50am. Tina Hodgson, part of the Greentree Parent council explains,
"We have to run it every year. We service about 75-100 kids every day. So that is almost 25% of our population."
Their philosophy is "whoever is hungry, can eat" so it becomes very expensive to run the program.
"Budget wise, it is approximately $1000 a month, so in a school year, it is about $10,000. We want to offer as much nutrition as we can," explains Hodgson.
Donations that are provided by the incredibly generous individuals and businesses of our community help with the purchase of food and items to feed these students. One of those generous organizations, the Drumheller Dragons, recently donated a large sum to the program. The Dragons did this through their annual "Pack the House for Charity" game, where the organization chooses a charity to raise, and donate money too. The amount that the Dragons have raised through their game is not yet finalized.
"We have had a few donations this year, but donations are down this year for the program itself, so this is a huge help for us because the account was getting rather low, so this is wonderful."
The program also has very few volunteers, if you enjoy interacting with the kids, and would like to volunteer head to the Greentree School webpage to learn more.
