A body builder from the Drumheller Valley is celebrating, although not too much, after winning a prestigious competition in Red Deer on the weekend.
Amber Leavitt took first place in the Figure D Open Class event at the Alberta Bodybuilding Association's Southern Alberta Championships.
"(I felt) like I was dreaming, it was very surreal," she confessed. "I was thinking maybe they had made a mistake, but when I was handed the trophy (I realised) nope, this is actually happening."
"It was a tough prep, I'm not going to lie," allowed Leavitt. "At some point in time I (questioned) is this worth it or not? It absolutely feels like it was worth it as this point in time."
Leavitt finished fifth in her class at Southern Alberta's in 2016, which earned her second visit to Provincials and she's ready to compete provincially again on June 24 at the Grey Eagle Casino Event Centre in Calgary.
"In Provincials they have some of the same women I competed with at this competition, but there's other competitions during the year that qualify you for Provincials." she noted. "My goal going in is just to enjoy the experience and hopefully, fingers crossed, maybe get a placement out of it."
Point of interest: Leavitt celebrated her win with a visit to a burger restaurant in Red Deer and cheesecake for dessert. She was back in the gym the next day to work off the calories.
