It's summertime in the valley and biking enthusiasts are ready to hit the trails.

So, what are some precautions that can be taken on biking excursions?

"A big one that we see in the shop is having a helmet but also having a helmet that fits properly or else there is not a lot of point if the helmet were to fall off if you fall," said Sasha Wright with Shredz in Drumheller.

"Another thing we really recommend is getting seasonal bike tune ups on your actual bike and then of course with young kids elbow and knee pads just for extra protection," explained Wright. "As well as being careful biking at night, lights and reflectors."

A buddy system is recommended on bike trips, particularly ones where travellers may not have cellphone service.

"Being in the badlands a lot of people are mountain biking so another thing we recommend is just being aware of where you are especially not having cellphone service in a lot of places it is hard if something were to happen so the buddy system comes in hand," noted Wright. "It all comes down to knowing what you are doing and how to get out of a situation if something were to happen."
