August long weekend is always busy in Drumheller, but this year's could go down in history as one of the busiest.

"Saturday came and at the end of the day we realized we had around 700 visitors: that was our record breaker for the season" recalled Jay Russell, Curator at the historic Atlas Coal Mine. "We thought Sunday may be a little bit slower: no, we had 882 visitors on Sunday, which is our biggest day in the history of the Atlas Coal Mine."

Holiday Monday's attendance was an easier to manage 400.

"Our staff had a great time, our visitors had a great time," Russell added. "Some of our staff interacted with the folks when they're coming off the tours or in the parking lot and it was just so much great feedback, it sounded like it was such a great time."

The Atlas Mine is open from 9:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. through Saturday, August 26. After that they will close at 5:00 p.m. through October 9, when they close for the winter.

"Over the years the numbers for long weekends have been going up, and we've built into our capacity for that and boy, we were ready, the visitors were ready and we all had a great time under the sun," concluded Russell.
