A number of family farms in the area have been recognized with a BMO Farm Family Award at the Calgary Stampede.
Randy and Wendy Kaiser run a 2,200 acre mixed farming operation near Hussar.
Their older son, Cole, now lives and works in Calgary, but still makes it back to the land that has been his family's since the 1940's.
"It's really good to see my parents (get) recognition because I know they're very involved in the community," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "They volunteer for everything ever since I can remember, so it was really good to see them receive that award."
"It's great growing up to have the open spaces," he continued. "You learn how to work and you learn how to do things, I think, in a good way. It's a good thing."
While Cole doesn't plan to be a full time farmer, his younger brother, Brady, is more so inclined, which bodes well for the future.
"It's tough: with land prices you can't really expand in our area that well, but it should still be viable for years to come anyway," he concluded.
Other area farm families recognized with a BMO Award at the Stampede this year include Dau Farms near Three Hills; the Heck Family, who farm near Delia; the Schonhofer Family, whose Majestic Farms was selected from Special Area #2; and the Kulyk Family from Special Area #3.
