Swimmers in the Drumheller Valley and area have to be excited about hitting the pool again in the fall.
The indoor pool at the Aquaplex has been closed since May 1 to allow for major renovations, including the installation of a gradual entry pool, along with a new steam room, locker room and hot tub.
"Painting will be complete this week, heating and ventilation stuff will be done by this time next week, tiling should be done by the end of next week as well," reported Darryl Drohomerski, the town's Director of Infrastructure Services. "The concrete will start coming out next week, the pool liner folks are going to be here at the beginning of July and we'll be working really hard in July and August to get that liner installed."
"There's been a few little things with some heating ducts at the end of their life that we're replacing and a couple of things to do with the steam room equipment," he added. "Really, in the scheme of things (we've found) nothing that's taken anyone by surprize."
Drumheller Town Council voted in April of 2016 to purchase a custom made stainless steel pool liner from a company in Italy. It arrived around Halloween and has been sitting in storage at the water treatment plant. The contract to install it originally came in over budget, but it was retendered and came in at a price councillors were willing to pay.
While the work on the pool continues, Aquaplex staff have begun recording the progress of the renovations.
"Modernization Mondays is the hashtag and it's on Twitter and Facebook and you can go onto our website and actually look at some of the photos," outlined Drohomerski. "The general contractor is actually going to be putting in a time lapse camera once the painting is done and you'll be able to follow the work online."
The scheduled date for the pool renovations to be finished is September 29.
