Update 12:00: The good news is it could have been a lot worse.
One person is in hospital, but no-one was killed in a three vehicle collision on Highway 9 east of the Morrin Corner this morning.
Emergency crews were called out from Drumheller and Starland County just after 7:00 a.m. to a spot about one kilometre east of where the highway turns east to go to Hanna.
"Police investigation revealed a westbound pick-up truck attempted to pass a westbound SUV when it met and sideswiped an eastbound tractor trailer," reported RCMP Staff Sergeant Kevin Charles of the Drumheller detachment. "The pick-up truck rolled before coming to an upright position in the ditch."
"The SUV received minor damage from debris and the tractor trailer was severely damaged," he continued. "The driver of the tractor trailer received minor soft tissue injuries, the driver of the pick-up truck sustained severe, but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by ground ambulance. The driver of the SUV was not injured."
Thick fog, with visibility as short as 100 metres, was reported at the time, which Charles is certain was a major factor in the collision.
"When you have fog that thick it's important to slow down and be patient if there's a lot of traffic," he cautioned. "Our emergency vehicles had the same difficulty: they were only doing about 70 (km/h) heading up there because they couldn't see the vehicle in front of them."
Charges are pending against the pick-up driver. Names are not being released.
Travel east of Drumheller is adversely affected this morning because of a highway accident east of the Morrin Corner.
The eastbound ramp is blocked at the intersection and emergency personnel are on scene directing traffic to detours around the accident site.
Details are still sketchy, but it appears there was a multiple vehicle accident about a kilometre or two east of Morrin Corner. we don't have any word on casualties.
Carrillion Canada crews on at the bottom of the North Hill directing traffic onto highway 576, the Verdant Valley Road, as the best way to get to Hanna until the crash site is cleaned up. We have no idea when that will be.
