A local women has received thousands of dollars towards her schooling.

Avril Wilson, 20, applied for and received the Masonic Higher Education Bursary worth $5,000.

The Fund recognizes, promotes and supports academic excellence that the Masonic Grand Lodge deems a benefit to humanity.

"I'm using it towards my education," beamed Wilson. "I'm in my third out of five years of Kinesiology and then I'll have an additional two years specializing after that."

The Grand Lodge awarded 30 of these bursaries through the province of Alberta and the North West Territories.

"It's going to pay for about a semester of my tuition. Maybe a couple of books along the way," she said. "It's based off of a financial need and look at your involvement in your community."

"I think it's really cool because you have to apply. Then you have your interview and then it's kind of a waiting game. Do you move on to the next level or are you done?"
