The Drumheller Institution opened its doors for the first inmates in 1967 and Quintal said they've have a great relationship with Town Hall ever since.

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Institution, so we actually have two events planned," explained Maureen Quintal, Assistant Warden at the Institution. "The first is what's called Freedom of the Town and it's a special honour that demonstrates the trust that the town has in our organization and the respect is has for the role we play in protecting the community."

"We've been given permission to block off the street between the BCF and Town Hall," outlined Quintal. "Past staff, current staff and our honour guard will parade from ther BCF to Town Hall, where the Mayor and local RCMP and some invited guests are waiting and a ceremony is held.
Following the ceremony, a plaque is affixed to Town Hall to commemorate the event."

"We've had several partnerships over the years that continue on and we're always open to talking about new ones," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "We maintain community gardens and trails and paths and snow removal, some of the churches in the winter, just to name a few things that we do. The majority of our staff volunteer at some point, whether in sports organizations or with charities."

On September 9th the Town of Drumheller and the Drumheller Institution get together to mark five decades of living side by side with a special 50th Anniversary Gala that will be held at the Badlands Community Facility.

Both events are open to the public.
