Rural crime is a problem that Alberta can't seem to shake. In Ottawa, MP Shannon Stubbs -- whose riding is immediately north of Drumheller's MP Kevin Sorenson's riding of Battle River-Crowfoot -- has introduced a motion asking the Federal Government for a bit of help.

Motion 167 calls upon the Federal Government to instruct the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to undertake a study on rural crime in Canada. Sorenson told 99.5 Drum FM this motion is a step in the right direction.

"She brought forward this motion that calls on the government to do a study on rural crime. Certainly in Alberta, but also in Saskatchewan, we see a real increase in what's happening out there."

Rural crime has been increasing since 2015, said Sorenson. He's part of the Alberta Rural Crime Task Force, a group of MPs looking into the causes of, and potential solutions for, rural crime.

Another objective of the task force -- and Motion 167 -- is to provide education for rural residents. Sorenson admitted that he's received numerous phone calls from people wondering what their rights are, whether they can make a citizen's arrest and how much force they can use to stop or deter crime.

An interesting idea to help deter rural crime in Alberta came from just across the provincial border.

"The provincial government [in Saskatchewan] has moved to different measures of allowing, for example, sheriffs, the ability to respond to calls," explained Sorenson. "You know, reporting crimes [like], 'somebody just left here, they stole my quad.' If there are no RCMP around, allowing some of those officers to make those calls, to file those reports."

Sorenson explained that Motion 167 is in its early stages and is bi-partisan in nature, making it an uncontroversial motion for Liberal and NDP MPs to accept.

"If we can work together with government then that's what we want to do. It's not all about politics, it's about getting answers and doing what's right."
