On Nov. 2, dozens of people braved the snow and cold to attend the opening night of the Youth Art Gala put on by the Drumheller & Area ASSET Development Coalition - a local organization tasked with building assets in local youth.

Katie Suntjens is with the Coalition and explained that this idea is in its second year.

"Last year we were approached by AHS to do a community project in conjunction with National Addictions Awareness Week and we were looking at a way of involving the youth. The topic was 'Making the Most of You' and I came up with an art contest and took it to the Coalition and here we are."

In keeping with the theme of addictions awareness, Gerald Mancini, a Community Addiction Services Administrator with Alberta Health Services gave a speech. Mayor Heather Colberg also spoke, as did Diana Rowe of the Drumheller & Area ASSET Development Coalition.

The contest's second year proved to be a success, with more than fifty entries.

"Each year we promote [the contest] to students in the area, specifically Delia, Morrin, Carbon and the Drumheller schools," said Suntjens. "This year we had 51 entries from Morrin and Carbon, and we're double our entries from last year."

No one from Delia or the Drumheller schools entered the contest, and no entries came in for the Make the Most of You and Make the Most of Your Community categories from students in Senior High.

The artwork will be on display until Nov. 14 at the Western GM Art Gallery at the Badlands Community Facility.
