The Draogns had a one off trip to Spruce Grove on Wednesday night to take on the Spruce Grove Saints. The two teams have similar records so a hard fought game is what was expected. It was not in the cards for the Dragons.
The Saints would open up the scoring 6:59 into the first period when Seth Fyten would score to give Spruce Grove the early 1-0 lead. They would add another with 1:31 to go when Nick Leyer scored his 12th of the year to make it 2-0 Saints. The shots were fairly even in the period with Spruce Grove out shooting Drumheller 10-8.
Just after the puck was dropped in the second, the Saints increased their lead as Nick Leyer scored his second of the game from Ryan Peckford at 14 seconds to make it 3-0 Spruce Grove. The majority of the play in the period was in the Drumheller end but Brady Risk intercepted a cross ice pass for a breakaway opportunity and scored his 21st of the season to make it 3-1 Spruce Grove with 3:27 left in the second period.dragonssaints1
Again early in the third, the Saints scored quickly, 51 seconds in, to regain the three goal lead. Mackenzie Harden scored his 13th of the year to make it 4-1 Spruce Grove. Drumheller would make it interesting at the 2:12 mark as Roc Truman scored his 20th of the season from Troy Dudley to make it 4-2 Saints. Drumheller had a stronger third as the play was more in the offensive zone. The Dragons pulled Hunter Virostek with 2:52 left and with 2:16 left it paid off. Shane Ott scored his first goal in twenty games with his 8th of the year from Brady Risk to make it 4-3 Saints. The Dragons would have a great chance to tie the game when Jordan Taupert tipped one on goal that hit the post. Drumheller would also get a short power play to end the game but could not score the equalizer. The final would be 4-3 Spruce Grove.
