The Drumheller Dragons travelled down Highway 9 to Calgary to face the Mustangs. The Dragons were going into the game leading the season series 3 games to one. Calgary was waiting for them.
The Mustangs came out of the gate prepared for the Dragons. Calgary opened the scoring as Daniel Rybarik scored 2:35 into the game. The Mustangs would add another just under two minutes later when Liam Freeborn would make it 2-0 Calgary. At 6:27, the Mustangs would make it 3-0 when Joel Krahenbil scored. That would be the end of the night for Dragons goaltender Daniel Allin. A tough night for Allin as he let in the three shots he faced. Hunter Virostek would take over. The Mustangs were not done as they would add another at 11:25 when Caden Shmyr scored to make it 4-0 after one period.
In the second, the Dragons would have four power-play opportunities but could not get anything past Mustangs goalie, Ben Howard. The only goal scored in the second was by the Mustangs at 7:01 when Liam Freeborn would score his second of the game. It was 5-0 Calgary after the second period. Drumheller was throwing pucks at the net as they had outshot Calgary 13-9 in the period.
Drumheller would get on the board in the third period. Near the midway mark of the period, Markus Boguslavsky would score his 16th of the season from Aiden Yakimchuk and Jordan Taupert. Things got a little crazy near the end of the period as one of the Mustangs players came off the bench to be involved in an altercation. On the ensuing powerplay, Drumheller would get their second goal of the game as Roc Truman scored his 23rd of the season from Bradley Stonnell and Derrick Budz. The final score would be Calgary 5 Drumheller 2.
With the loss, Drumheller is solidified in third place in the AJHL South Division. They do not know who they will face in the first round as of yet. Calgary has 65 points and sits in 5th place with two games remaining, while Canmore is within striking distance at 63 points in 6th place. Calgary must play the Calgary Canucks on Friday and Drumheller on Sunday to finish their season. The Canmore Eagles have two games against Camrose to finish their year. If Calgary wins both and Canmore loses both of their games, Drumheller will face Calgary in round one. Any other scenario means the Dragons will battle Canmore in the first round.
