The Drumheller Dragons haven't played an Alberta Junior Hockey League game since late March, but it hasn't been much of an off season for the people trying to put together the 2018-19 club.
"Our Summer Combine and our Main Camp happens June 8-10 in Cochrane, so not a lot of time there," reported Dragons Business Manager Dustin Edwards who, himself, just started with the team on May 1. "We already see some of our pre-season schedule coming out for August 29-31 in Camrose, so it's a busy summer and it goes faster than a guy thinks."
"We're calling it a Main Camp just because we don't have a lot of time from our August skates to our regular season games to really evaluate the roster," he explained. "It'll be an opportunity to really take a look at those guys that are coming into the fold."
Unlike senior teams, junior hockey clubs are always replacing players who have grown too old, so Edwards says it keeps the coaching and scouting staff very busy during the off season.
"We have a few '98 born players this year and we're only allowed to carry six, so the coaching staff will have to make decisions on them," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "Our head coach and GM Kevin Hasselberg is already on the road right now doing some recruitment because that Summer Combine/Main Camp June 8 is not that far away."
The Dragons will also have to work around their Summer Hockey School, which is scheduled for August 20-24 at the Memorial Arena.
