The New Year started off with a bang and a crunch for the Badlands Hellraisers.
The Drumheller Valley's only roller derby team traveled to Medicine Hat to kick off 2018.
"We went to an event called Naughty vs. Nice in Medicine Hat," reported April De Smet, who gos by the alias Shelby 500. "We got broken up into different levels of play and we had a lot of fun."
The local ladies are headed back to Medicine Hat later this month, on January 27.
"The Hellraisers play their first game of the season of 2018 and we are playing against the Gas City Regulators," outlined De Smet. "We played their sister team, the Foxy Rollers, so we're playing their sister team this time."
"Now, it's more strategy rather than getting a good hit on people," she explained. "It really makes you think when you get on that track, you need to have total track awareness: where everybody is, where your teammates are, where the opponents are and where you need to be on the track."
2018 started off with a new Hellraisers logo, which you can see here. The Annual General Meeting is on January 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Drumheller Stampede Barn. De Smet says they're planning another 'fresh meat' recruitment night in March and will hopefully host their second ever home game some time in June.
