The place to be on Monday was the Badlands Community Facility for the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony in Drumheller.
The seats in the facility were nearly full and a number of people stood along the walls as the community remembered and paid tribute to those who fought for our freedom in World War I, World War II, Korean War, Afghanistan, numerous UN duties around the world, and those who continue to serve our nation.
MP for Battle River-Crowfoot, Damien Kurek was on hand representing the Government of Canada, Mayor Heather Colberg for the Town of Drumheller, Rob Thomas representing the Indigenous people, the honour guard from the Drumheller Institution, numerous veterans, as well as youth from our local Sea Cadet troop, Scouts, and Girl Guides. The Pioneer Singers choir was on hand to sing a number of songs throughout the ceremony.
Many families brought their children to the ceremony including Steve Lowry, who noted the importance of bringing his kids to the event. “So everybody remembers what has happened and people given up their lives and everything for us to live the freedoms that we have.”
Steve’s daughter Emily understands why the Remembrance Day ceremony is so important. “So we can remember the guys who sacrificed for us.” Steve’s son Aden has a similar reason to attend. “To remember the people that sacrificed their lives for us.”
From all accounts the ceremonies around Drumheller were also well attended.
