It is just a matter of time before the community of Lehigh in the Drumheller Valley is a thing of the past.
During the Drumheller Town Council meeting on October 21st, the first reading of Bylaw 33-24 was introduced which will close all of the roads within Lehigh. According to the Town of Drumheller, “the public rights are being closed as you cannot have environmental reserve lands with a roadway through the middle of it. It’s just much like the rest of our projects where we’ve had to close roads as part of our overall project.”
Also during the Council meeting, the tender was awarded for the demolition and removal of buildings on the remaining six properties within Lehigh. The gas lines and power lines have all but been removed from the area. The Town shares that “the demolition includes the removal of all main and accessory buildings, as well as cleaning up all the human ‘stuff’ left behind. Basically, at the end of the work, it will be turned into very naturalized land with nothing man-made left behind other than perhaps a hydrant. We are also removing the highway approaches to people will not be able to access that area any longer.”
After the demolition work is complete and the roads are closed, the Town of Drumheller explains that “people can expect to see a naturalized state of trees and high grasses, and in fact, some of it has already returned to natural state this summer.”
The public hearing for Bylaw 33-24 to close the roads in Lehigh will be at Council Chambers on Monday, November 18th.
