Late Wednesday afternoon (April 16), parents of students from St. Anthony’s School were alerted to a cougar sighting near the school.
According to a statement sent out by Principal Celeste Schrock, the school enacted a “Shelter-In-Place” due to the sighting of the cougar on a neighbouring property. Drumheller Protective Services officers confirmed with the school the presence of a cougar in the vicinity. Once the Shelter In Place was put in effect, students and staff that were outdoors were instructed to come back inside the school.
Students were dismissed out of the front doors of the school at the regular dismissal time and staff were on hand to ensure the safety of students.
As far as we understand, the cougar was seen by a person passing by the school yesterday afternoon. There is no word yet if the cougar has been found. We have reached out to Alberta Fish and Wildlife, as well as Drumheller Protective Services. Protective Services did see the cougar climbing the north valley If we receive an update, we will share as soon as available.
