Your Drumheller Dragons just haven’t had much puck luck in the series so far and were hoping that the change of venue, home to the Memorial Arena, would change the outcome.
Heading into Game 3 on Tuesday night, the Dragons were down in the series to the Calgary Canucks, two games to none. Drumheller has not led so far in this series. Unfortunately, that would continue in Game 3.
Calgary would open the scoring early in the first period when Kenny Sutton scored his first of the postseason, 2:40 into the first period. Drumheller would have a number of chances to tie the game in the first, hitting two posts and just missing on a few open nets with the puck going off players in front. Calgary would lead 1-0 after one period.
Drumheller would tie the game on the powerplay midway through the second period. Tristan Payne, who has had an excellent playoff, scored his fifth of the postseason, from Jase Johnstone and Kai Matthew at 12:42. Calgary would regain the lead with 3:41 left in the second with former Dragon Alexey Trischuk scoring his third of the playoffs, making it 2-1 Calgary.
Drumheller would have opportunities to tie the game in the third but again just couldn’t get the equalizer. With just over five minutes left, Calgary would score another on the powerplay when Rhett Melnyk scored his fourth of the playoffs, making it 3-1 Calgary. Drumheller would pull goaltender Matthew Kondro but could not muster any good chances with the extra attacker. The game would end with Calgary taking the 3-1 win.
