Your Drumheller Dragons came into game two of their first round playoff series against the Canmore Eagles with all of the confidence in the world.
After the 11-2 victory on Friday night, the team knew that Canmore would be wanting to come back and make a statement in front of their home fans. They got off to a strong start with Canmore’s Owen Jones scoring only 1:45 into the first period. Canmore would add to their lead at 7:40 when Owen Jones scored his second of the period, from Kayden Rawji. Canmore wasn’t finished as they would add one more before the end of the first, when Aidan Tkachuk scored with 5:01 left in the first, making it 3-0 Canmore after one period.
Canmore would add to their lead early in the second, when Rhett Dekowny scored, assisted by Owen Jones, only 23 seconds in. Drumheller would change goaltenders, with Sean Cootes heading to the bench and Matthew Kondro would take over. The Dragons would get on the board at 5:39 when Hudson Gainer would streak in and snap a backhand by Canmore goaltender Alex Scheiwiller, assisted by Tate Yule, making it 4-1 Eagles. Drumheller would have their chances to get back in the game but the bounces weren’t going Drumheller’s way.
In the third, Canmore would stretch their lead to 5-1 when Jaren Brinson would score at 12:57. The Dragons would answer just over a minute later when Will McLaughlin would score his second of the playoffs, from Ayden Peters and Kai Matthew, making it 5-2 Eagles. Drumheller would pull their goaltender with just over two minutes left and again would have their chances but could not find the back of the net. Canmore would take the victory, 5-2, tying the series at one game a piece.
