The place to be on Tuesday, April 15th, for those who enjoy pasta was Boston Pizza in Drumheller.
Boston Pizza hosted their Spaghetti Eating Contest and according to Heather Jones, Owner of Boston Pizza, this event has been going on for years. “We hit 15 years, before COVID. We have had a bit of a gap. We had a slight gap before that but this would have been the 16th event that we have done.”
The contest is a fundraiser and this year the Drumheller Community Football Association was chosen as the recipient of the funds. Jones notes that timing was key in the choice. “For starters this year, I just decided in January that I was done with the whole pre-COVID, post-COVID, decision making process. I started looking at what we could bring back. When I thought about bringing back the Spaghetti Eating Contest, the Titans were getting started and the timing really felt like a great opportunity to partner with them.”
The actual contest had four different groups and is ran differently than some others, admits Jones. “It’s the first to finish, so it’s just one order. It is not a huge amount to finish. I competed one year and ended up siting back and enjoying my water, twirling my spaghetti, as there was no chance I was going to win.”
There were four youth competitors, five teens, two women, and three men competing. The fastest time in the youth was done by Odin with a time of 1:05. For the teens, it was Jon with a time of 1:03. In the women’s division, Steph won with a time of 1:41, In the men’s division, Bailey won with a time of 1:58.
The fundraiser was a great success with $2,700 raised for the Drumheller Community Football Association. Jones notes that they plan to have this event again next year, plus also have a number of different opportunities to help local non-profit groups to raise money for their cause.
