Your Drumheller Dragons were hopeful heading into game two of their AJHL South Division Final series against the Calgary Canucks.
Unfortunately, they would be down one of their veteran players as Kai Matthew was suspended one game for a hit he doled out on Friday night. With the suspension, it provided an opportunity for some of the rookie players to get in the lineup.
Calgary came out ready to play and would get an early powerplay opportunity in the first period. Riley Bracko would score his third of the postseason 2:21 into the period, putting the Dragons down 1-0. Just over five minutes later, Calgary’s Hayden Fechner tallied his third of the playoffs, increasing the Canucks lead to 2-0. Only, 34 seconds later, Calgary would add another with their top scorer, Luc Trevors, scoring his 6th of the postseason, putting the Dragons in a 3-0 deficit. Drumheller would get on the board with a powerplay goal of their own at 13:33, when Lauchlan Kozicky scored his third of the playoffs from Brec Christenson. Calgary would regain their three goal lead with 4:22 remaining in the first, when Nathan Maloney scored his second of the playoffs, on the powerplay, making it 4-1 Canucks after one period.
Early in the second, Calgary would add another on the powerplay when Jack Plandowski scored his third of the playoffs, making it 5-1 Canucks. The Dragons just couldn’t muster many opportunities in the second period. Calgary would add one more on a nice goal by Jayden Joly (4) with 4:44 remaining and would take the 6-1 lead to the dressing room.
Drumheller would make a change in goaltenders heading into the third period with Brandon Williams, who is from Drumheller, making his AJHL and Dragons debut. This would hopefully inspire the Dragons in the third period. Drumheller would score the only goal in the third, at 12:58, when Allen Sherpa scored his second of the postseason, from Lauchlan Kozicky, short-handed, to cut the deficit to 6-2. Williams had a great period for the Dragons, stopping all 18 shots he faced. Drumheller would fall in game two, 6-2.
