Sunterra, which operates a number of hog barns in the Drumheller area, along with a large facility in Acme, a greenhouse in Acme, Trochu Meats in Trochu, and a number of grocery stores in Alberta, has filed for creditor protection.
In publicly posted documents, five corporations, Sunterra Farms Ltd., Sunterra Food Corp., Sunterra Quality Food Markets Inc., Sunwold Farms Ltd., and Trochu Meat Processors, all filed notice to creditors on March 24th.
In the documentation, liabilities for the five corporations total over 140 million dollars. Listed in the documents is Canadian Western Bank as being owed $17.5 million.
Last summer, Sunterra’s Trochu Meats had a significant fire resulting in the loss of 140 jobs in Trochu. The operations at the facility have been suspended since the fire and there has not been word of when or if the facility will reopen in Trochu.
The filing for creditor protection does not necessarily mean the end of the Sunterra group of companies. It will potentially mean some restructuring for the companies. What that will entail is unknown at this time.
We have reached out to Sunterra for a statement and when received, we will update the story.
