Your Drumheller Dragons had the opportunity to head to the AJHL South Final on Sunday afternoon, after pulling out the 2-1 victory on the road in Canmore on Friday night.
The Canmore Eagles came into the game with desperation knowing that either they win to force game seven in the series or their season is over. The Memorial Arena was filled with 1,363 fans cheering, and most hoping the Dragons could wrap things up in the series.
Canmore would open the scoring only 1:02 into the first, when Hudson Landmark scored his first of the postseason. Midway through the period, the Eagles would add to their lead on a goal by Tavynn Schlaht at 9:05, making it 2-0 Canmore. The Dragons have done an exceptional job at penalty killing throughout this series but Canmore would score their first powerplay goal of the series with 23 seconds left in the first period, with Ethan Look scoring his second of the playoffs, giving the Eagles the 3-0 lead after one period.
The Dragons would get on the board on a powerplay goal of their own late in the second period. Bradley Gallo scored his third of the postseason, from Will McLaughlin and Ellis Mieyette at 14:45. Just over a minute later, Canmore would regain their three goal lead with Will Lutic scoring his first of the playoffs, unassisted, making it 4-1 Eagles.
In the third, Canmore would add another early when Cohen Daoust scored his second of the playoffs at 1:34. Time ticked away and Drumheller would pull goaltender Sean Cootes with over three minutes left. The Dragons were able to get one back with 2:44 remaining, with Easton Daneault scoring his first of the playoffs, from Kai Matthew and Brec Christenson. Then, while the Dragons net was still empty, Canmore’s Owen Jones made it 6-2 Eagles with 1:43 left. Drumheller added one more with 1:20 left when Lauchlan Kozicky scored his second of the series, from Will McLaughlin. Canmore would take game six 6-3, and force game seven Tuesday night in Canmore.
