Our Drumheller Dragons were hoping that being at home would help them take the lead in their first round series with the Canmore Eagles.
The Memorial Arena was electric last night with over 1,000 fans in attendance. The game would be a defensive battle to start with both goaltenders, Alex Scheiwiller for Canmore and Sean Cootes for Drumheller, stopping everything that came their way. Each team would have one powerplay in the first period but neither would score.
In the second, again both goaltenders put on a show. The Dragons would get a full two minutes of 5 on 3 powerplay time late in the period but unfortunately would not capitalize. The game would remain tied 0-0 heading into the third period.
Early in the third, Cohen Daoust from Canmore would open the scoring at 3:45, with his first of the playoffs, from Nathan Macpherson-Ridgewell. At 4:06, Dragons netminder Sean Cootes would get ran into by his own player and would have to leave the game, bringing Matthew Kondro into the game. Drumheller would equalize at 7:32 when Tristan Payne (3) fired one in from the left point, assisted by Allen Sherpa and Jase Johnstone. Just over three minutes later, Drumheller would take their first lead of the game when Lauchlan Kozicky scored his first of the postseason at 10:38, assisted by Ellis Mieyette and Will McLaughlin. Canmore would pull their goaltender with 1:33 left in the game for the extra attacker. Drumheller would capitalize quickly as Brec Christenson would score his first of the postseason into the empty net to seal the deal for our Dragons, 3-1.
