Many local Drumheller residents and visitors have had the opportunity to enjoy the Dancing With The Dinosaurs Powwow that was typically held on July 1st as part of the Canada Day festivities in the Drumheller Valley.
It looks like the event is growing and moving dates to be a stand alone event in August. Lynn Fabrick from Dry Canyon Collectables and chair of the Dancing With The Dinosaurs Powwow, shares the new dates. “We are so excited. We are officially moving to August Long Weekend, same venue, because that way it is a stand alone event. We can put it over the two days, the Saturday and the Sunday, August 2nd and 3rd, where we will showcase so much more and that way the visitors can come and take in the powwow for the weekend”
It looks like the event will have a number of things to check out according to Fabrick. “On the Saturday, there will be powwow itself. On Sunday, there will be some performers. We have a throat singer from Nunavut, we have a hoop dancer, we have bands, a tipi tour, hand games, and the artisan market which will be running all weekend.” There will also be an educational aspect to the event as Fabrick and her team will be lining a pathway by the new tipi sculpture with orange shirts, to enlighten visitors about Truth and Reconciliation, and red dresses bringing attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women.
For the past number of years, Lynn and Mike Fabrick have been the organizers of the event, but now Lynn shares that there are more involved. “I have a powwow organizing committee. They asked how they could contribute. It’s a great group and I can’t thank them enough for all their input, their ideas, and their freshness and energy.”
This event has continued to grow and the growth will continue admits Fabrick. “We officially started in 2017. To where we are now, just having people approach us about attending or participating, that just speaks volumes as to how well we’re progressing. We can’t thank the community and everyone.” The powwow started as a one hour event on Canada Day to now a stand alone two day event.
There is always room for more help so if you are interested in being involved on the two day event, reach out to Lynn and the committee through the store, Dry Canyon Collectables, or visit their Facebook page, Dancing With The Dinosaurs.
