A local retailer that had stores in Drumheller and Stettler, has closed its doors and has shared that it is now in receivership.
The Sweet Home group of stores, including the Homestead House by Sweet Home at the Homestead Antique Museum in Drumheller, and Sweet Home on Main in downtown Stettler, had been expanding in the area with stores in Sylvan Lake, Canmore, Red Deer, Stettler, and Drumheller. Months ago they found themselves in a battle for the parking lot of their busiest location in Sylvan Lake. They put out a plea to their customers for financial support by the purchase of gift cards to help with the costs of potentially purchasing the building of their Sylvan Lake location and hopes to reopen the adjacent parking lot.
In a social media post by Sweet Home on the Lake, back in September, they were able to raise over $250,000 in gift card sales and the amount raised was speculated to be higher than that.
All of the locations have been closed as of Monday, February 4th, and a number of people still have outstanding gift cards. There have been a number of businesses and organizations that have stepped up to help those with outstanding balances on their gift cards. A local tattoo artist from Donalda has offered people to use the gift card for 25 percent of the cost of a tattoo session. Saving Grace Animal Rescue Society will honour gift cards towards the adoption of a new pet. This promotion is to run for two weeks and is only available for onsite adoptions.
The owners of Sweet Home have offered their apologies to their customers via their social media page. “We can’t answer all your questions, we wish we could. But this is now out of our hands. We are in receivership and unable to operate and unaware of what the future looks like.”
