Your Drumheller Dragons took to the road on Friday night as they travelled north to Drayton Valley.
The Dragons and the Drayton Valley Thunder are in a battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in the AJHL South Division. Going into the game on Friday night, the Thunder were only five points back of the Dragons with two games in hand.
Both teams came out in the first period knowing the stakes at hand and each had good chances in the offensive zone. Drumheller would score the only goal of the period, at 12:57 when Ellis Mieyette streaked down the right side and was knocked off the puck, but Easton Daneault picked it up and put it in the back of the net. Daneault scored his 13th of the year, assisted by Ellis Mieyette.
In the second, the flood gates would open for the Dragons. Kai Matthews scored his third of the year at 2:51, assisted Brec Christenson and Ayden Peters. Then, with 14:00 minutes left in the period, Dragons goaltender Sean Cootes called for trainer Samantha Delsing as something wasn’t right. Cootes would leave the game and Matthew Kondro would have to come in the game. Drumheller would add to their lead at 7:14 when Lachlan Kozicky scored his 8th of the year, from Allen Sherpa and Hudson Gainer. The Dragons would score again on a five on three powerplay, with Ellis Mieyette scoring his 9th of the season, assisted by Easton Daneault and Bradley Gallo at 11:37. On the same powerplay, Drumheller would again find the back of the net at 12:25 with Luca Dufour tallying his 6th of the season, from Logan Peskett and Allen Sherpa, making it 5-0 Drumheller.
The third period would see Drayton Valley push back but Matthew Kondro would keep the Thunder at bay. Drumheller would add one more with 3:30 left, again on the powerplay, when Easton Daneault scored his second of the game from Bradley Gallo and Ellis Mieyette. That’s how the game would end, 6-0 in favour of Drumheller. It would be the first time in Dragons history that two goaltenders would combine for a shutout, but the disappointing thing is that both Sean Cootes and Matthew Kondro will not get credit for the shutout.
