From Jan. 20 to 24, 2025, Drumheller RCMP participated in Operation Cold Start, a province-wide initiative aimed at reducing the theft of idling vehicles during cold winter conditions.
During the week-long campaign, officers checked approximately 50 unattended, idling vehicles within the community to determine whether keys were left inside, and if the vehicles were properly secured. This provided an opportunity for officers to engage with residents and educate them on best practices to prevent vehicle theft in winter.
Over the course of the campaign, Drumheller RCMP found:
- 2 unlocked vehicles left idling with keys in the ignition
- 6 locked vehicles left idling with keys in the ignition.
Officers engaged with vehicle owners providing information and discussion to help educate and bring awareness to vehicle owners and drivers about safeguarding their vehicles during the winter months.
Tips to help prevent auto thefts:
- Use a remote starter or stay with your vehicle as it warms up
- Never leave keys, valuables, children or pets inside an unattended vehicle
- Use a steering wheel lock
- Keep your vehicle locked at all times
- Remove your garage door openers from your vehicle when parked in your driveway
The Drumheller RCMP continues to address crime in the local communities including through prevention, education, and awareness and thanks the public for their understanding and engagement during such operations.
