Last week the Town of Trochu was informed that the local Bank of Montreal branch will be moving their clients to Acme and closing their location in the community of just over 1,000 residents.
In a statement from BMO Bank of Montreal, they share that they are always assessing their branch network. “We continuously assess our operations – including our branch network – to adapt to changing consumer preferences for service delivery.”
The branch is expected to close on July 25, 2025 and customers can continue banking with BMO in their locations in Acme, Olds, Drumheller, or any other BMO branch within the network. “We recognize that challenges can come with a transition like this for some customers and we are providing support, including delivering in-person seminars focused on our comprehensive digital and telephone banking platforms.”
In a letter sent to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, Mayor Barry Kletke of the Town of Trochu, explains that they have concerns regarding these upcoming changes. “We are concerned that BMO has not conducted adequate consultation with the affected community to understand the full impact of this decision. This is particularly concerning given the essential role the branch plays in the daily lives of our residents, especially newcomers, seniors, and small business owners who rely on in-person banking services.”
Also included in the letter was the history of BMO in Trochu. The branch has been in the community for over 100 years, opening as the Merchants Bank of Canada in 1909. There is one other financial institution within Trochu but for a number of years, the Bank of Montreal was the only bank within the community.
BMO Bank of Montreal shares that customers can stay updated on developments at the branch in Trochu, where they can also learn more about how BMO will support them through the transition.
