If you haven’t made it out to East Coulee yet for Christmas in the Coulee, you have another weekend yet to take advantage.
The Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site and the East Coulee School Museum have partnered once again to help all in and around the Drumheller Valley to get in the Christmas spirit. Jessica Schatz, Executive Director for the Atlas Coal Mine shares that they love hosting such a great event. “We absolutely love hosting Christmas In The Coulee in collaboration with the East Coulee School Museum. We find that the community really embraces the event and utilizes it as a way to get together with their friends and their family, to enjoy some good old fashioned Christmas fun.”
The event really brings patrons back to the heyday of East Coulee when both the Atlas and School were in operation. “It definitely has a bit of the historic, nostalgic feel,” shares Schatz. “We try to embrace that at the event with things such as rides on our historic Christmas train, simple crafts, visits with Santa, and some great live music. They are all parts of Christmas that people in East Coulee have been celebrating for decades.”
If Christmas lights are what you are looking for, they have you covered at Christmas In The Coulee confirms Schatz. “At the Atlas Coal Mine we actually have about 40,000 Christmas lights that we string up, all throughout our 12 acre site. All the way from our sign at the entrance, up to the wash house, and of course our wonderful light display in our tipple.”
It is a large job to string all the lights admits Schatz. “We start putting lights up, right after our Halloween event, Atlas After Dark. It takes us about four weeks to put all the lights up.”
This is a large fundraiser for both the Atlas Coal Mine and East Coulee School Museum. A large number of sponsors and volunteers are invaluable to make the event such a large success. Schatz noted that last Friday, they had the most they have ever had to attend the first night of Christmas In The Coulee. There are two more nights for you to visit, Friday, December 13th, and Saturday, December 14th. The event is from 5 PM to 8:30 PM at both the Atlas Coal Mine and East Coulee School Museum.
