Last week, November 28, at an assembly at Morrin School, a Grade 3 student from the Rumsey area was recognized for his bravery.
Members from both the Drumheller RCMP and Rumsey Fire Department were on hand to present Dextin Van Straten an award for courageously calling 911 during an emergency.
The incident happened back on September 23rd, near Rumsey. Dextin was the lone passenger in a vehicle when the driver went into medical distress. His proper use of 911, including his bravery, composure, and actions, resulted in a swift response by emergency services. First responders that attended the scene commended the young man for his response to the emergency.
Cst. Daniel Clarry of Drumheller RCMP presented Dextin with the “Detachment Commander’s Certificate of Appreciation” and a RCMP Challenge Coin. The Rumsey Fire Department presented Dextin with a backpack containing various items. During the presentation, Dextin’s bravery, composure, and confidence was highlighted.
Staff Sergeant Robert Harms of Drumheller RCMP shares that without Dextin’s actions the incident would have been different. “There is no doubt that the actions of Dextin were instrumental in ensuring medical aid was quickly activated and directed to the emergency. His actions that day may have saved a life!”
