Your Drumheller Dragons had a light schedule this weekend with only one game on tap, Sunday afternoon in Calgary against the Canucks.
The Dragons were hoping to take a win against a team that they always battle hard against and fell to last season in the playoffs. Calgary had a different plan in mind.
The first would start as a strong period for the Dragons, outshooting the Canucks midway through the period, by a 7-4 margin. Calgary would get on the board with one of their top lines capitalizing late in the period. The league’s top point getter, Jack Plandowski opened the scoring with his 15th of the year at 15.44, tying Dragons forward Bradley Gallo with the most goals this season. The Dragons would be down 1-0 after one.
Early in the second, that same line for the Canucks would increase their lead, with Nolan Dupont scoring his 9th of the year, from Plandowski and Simon Bowland, making it 2-0. Drumheller would have their chances with a couple of powerplay opportunities in the period but could not get one past Calgary goaltender Lukas Renaud. The Canucks would take the 2-0 lead into the third period.
You could tell the Dragons were getting frustrated but they didn’t give up. The team would have a number of chances in the third but the defensive structure of the Canucks stymied the Dragons. Calgary would add three more goals in the third period by Wade Wallace at 2:58, Cody Pisarczyk at 8:02 on the power play, and Logan Murray with 4:45 left. The story of the game was Calgary netminder Lukas Renaud. He stopped all 46 shots he faced. The final score would be 5-0 Canucks.
