The importance of recognizing those who fought for our freedom is not lost on local veteran and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22 Gary Boucher. Boucher was part of the Canadian Forces working at a number of bases across the country. “I served quite of few places, mostly out west here between Calgary and Edmonton. I also served in Petawawa, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia. I did a lot of temporary duty at a lot of different bases, so I got to see the whole country.”
Boucher shares why it is so important to remember those who fought for our country. “Well Jason, just look at your job. You’re on the radio station. You can come out and enjoy playing the music, people like listening to you. If it wasn’t for our boys and girls, back in the Great Wars, you wouldn’t be allowed to do that. What these people did for us, it was standing up for the little person and that’s why it means so much for me for Remembrance Day.”
The importance of younger people understanding why Remembrance Day continues to be acknowledged, not only in the community but also in the schools, is not lost on Boucher. “We’re covering all the schools, which means we get to see the kids and the kids get to see us. They get to ask us a lot of questions because they don’t teach a lot of it in the schools, in the curriculum anymore. My fear is that it will get lost.” Boucher is proud how our local Legion makes a point to involve the young people in the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies in Drumheller.
For those that may be on the fence about attending one of the many Remembrance Day services in our area, Boucher provides insight on why one should attend. “Think of the way we live. It is because of these people that stood up for the little fella. A lot of them didn’t return home, they gave up their lives, gave up their family. Think about what you would do if you had to give up your family or your livelihood, this is why these ceremonies are so important for us to remember and say thank you for your service.”
