Our Drumheller Dragons had a rare midweek home game Wednesday against a team that is one of the best in the league.
The Whitecourt Wolverines are in the midst of a four game in five night road trip, which saw them win in Olds on Tuesday night. The Dragons were hoping to rebound after a tough loss on Saturday night to the Drayton Valley Thunder.
It would begin on the right note for the Dragons very early in the first period. With a flurry of activity in front of the Whitecourt net, Easton Daneault would knock the puck into the back of the net for his seventh of the year, from Ellis Mieyette at 1:05. Whitecourt would have their opportunities with a couple of power play chances but Dragons netminder Sean Cootes made some key saves to keep Whitecourt at bay. With 5:59 left in the first, Lauchlan Kozicky of the Dragons would score his fifth of the year, from Allen Sherpa and affiliate Reily Pickford. Drumheller would take the 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
In the second, again the Dragons would capitalize early with Bradley Gallo scoring his league leading 13th goal of the season, from Ellis Mieyette, who already has 18 assists in his rookie campaign, at 1:47. The just under three minutes later, the Dragons would make it 4-0 on Easton Daneault’s second goal of the game (8), from Bradley Gallo. Drumheller would take the 4-0 score into the third period.
Whitecourt would have their chances once again in the final period but Dragons goaltender Sean Cootes, with help from his defensive partners, would hold off the Wolverines. Cootes would attain the 24 save shutout and the Dragons would get their 10th win of the year.
