On Friday, October 11, Sunshine Lodge was the place to be for their annual Pie Social and Pie Auction.
Over one hundred people were on hand to enjoy pie and bid on a number of pies up for auction. Kelsie Yavis, Recreation Director shares that the event did very well. “We raised a record breaking 7,560 dollars this year. We had approximately 130 attendees and auctioned off 40 pies this year.”
The funds raised are used for both the Sunshine and Hillview Lodges in Drumheller and Yavis and her team can’t thank the community enough. “The community was so generous. We can’t thank them enough. The support for them coming out and donating all this money to go towards our seniors and support all of our activities. We are so, so appreciative to the community for this.” The funds are used for bussing for the residents and entertainment that comes in to both Sunshine and Hillview Lodges. Some of these entertainers come from Calgary or Edmonton, and include musicians and even theatre groups.
An added bonus to the event this year was that Mayor Heather Colberg offered to be pied in the face by the top bidder and according to Yavis, the bidding was pretty ferocious. “It was $450 to pie the Mayor this year. It was a bidding war. We had Maurice Thevanez come down from Sherwood Park. He has been our auctioneer for years and years. We were so thankful that he came down and kept that bid going and going.” The winning bid was from Steve Wannstrom, Reeve for Starland County.
Yavis admits that the support makes her feel great about our community. “It absolutely does. Like I said, we just can’t thank the community enough for their support.”
